Fight Club was released in 1999 and directed by David Fincher (Se7en, Panic Room, Zodiac…) starring Edward Norton as the Narrator, the unnamed protagonist suffering from insomnia, and Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden, an anarchist revolutionary which is also a soap salesman. They are joined by Helena Bonham Carter who plays the role of Marla Singer, as well as Meat Loaf and Jared Leto who play other members of the Fight Club. The studio executives hated the movie and the risks it took, and indeed it did not meet the success they expected at the box-office (Fight Club still grossed $100 million for a budget of $64 million though). However, it was one of the most controversial and talked about movie of 1999 and it was soon considered as a cult-classic movie worldwide. The New York Times even dubbed it “the defining cult movie of our time”.

Here are a few fun facts about Fight Club: to prepare for their role, Brad Pitt and Edward Norton took classes in boxing, taekwondo and grappling as well as a soap-making course from a company called Auntie Godmother. In the scene where Edward Norton is learning to fight, he was supposed to throw a relatively weak punch in Tyler Durden’s shoulder, however he instead punched him in the ear which makes Brad Pitt reaction “you hit me in the ear?!” an actual, genuine reaction. The studio executives hated one of Marla’s line where she says “Oh, Tyler, I want your abortion” after having sex with him, and asked Fincher to change it. The line was changed by “I haven’t been fucked like that since grade school” and while the studio executives were even more horrified, David Fincher refused to change it.

Fight Club was a critical success, but most of all it is a fan favourite as we can see with its Tomato Meter of 79% and its Audience Score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you want to learn more about the making of Fight Club, check those 42 interesting facts about the movie on Factinate.
