Thompson’s book.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was directed in 1998 by Terry Gilliam, starring a legendary duo: Johnny Depp as Raoul Duke (the character is based on Hunter S. Thompson) and Benicio del Toro as his lawyer, Dr Gonzo. The movie also provides an impressive cast of stars, like Tobey Maguire, Cameron Diaz, Fleas of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Hunter S. Thompson himself in a cameo. The movie crashed at the box office, grossing $13.7 million for a budget of $18.5 million. Terry Gilliam wanted it to be a risky movie, dividing the critics and the fans, and he had a huge success doing so according to the mixed reviews released when the psychedelic movie came out. He wanted to make Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas “one of the best movies of all time, and one of the most hated movies of all time”.
Here are a few interesting facts about the movie: instead of Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro, Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando were originally considered for the roles of Duke and Gonzo but they grew too old. By the way, to take the role of Dr Gonzo, Benicio Del Toro went into a radical diet, eating 16 donuts a day, to gain 45 pounds in nine weeks, while Johnny Depp moved into Hunter S. Thompson basement for four months to study his character. While the movie was a financial failure, it also boosted the sales of Hunter S. Thomson’s book so much that it had to be reprinted 6 times to meet the demand.
As Terry Gilliam predicted, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas divided the critics with a Tomatometer Score of 50% but is a true fan favourite with an Audience Score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.
