Donnie Darko was directed in 2001 by Richard Kelly, starring Jake Gyllenhaal in the role of Donnie, a confused teenager living in Middlesex, Virginia in 1988. Young Donnie tries to find the meaning of his doomsday related visions as he is visited by Frank (James Duval), a scary rabbit who tells him the world will end in 28 days, 06 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. Donnie Darko was filmed in 28 days, which matches the timeline of the movie, and it was almost released direct-to-video. The movie was released one month after September 11th and its trailer featuring a plane crash guaranteed the movie a limited theatrical distribution in America. While the movie had limited box-office success, it still grossed $7.5 million for a budget of $4.5 million. More importantly, it straight up knew critical acclaim and many believe it’s still one of the best independent movies of all time. Nowadays, Donnie Darko has gathered a cult-following, its fans loving all the different ways the movie can be read and understood.
Here a few interesting facts about Donnie Darko: Jake Gyllenhaal claims he still doesn’t fully understand the movie to this day, but he thinks it was actually never meant to be understood. After meeting Richard Kelly four times, Vince Vaughn refused the lead role because he was uncomfortable playing a 16-year-old teenager. Donnie Darko was supposed to be released direct-to-video or on Starz cable network, but Drew Barrymore and her production company stepped in to ensure the movie was released theatrically. It was also Seth Rogen's first movie ever, in the role of the bully Ricky Danforth.
