Do you feel like its time for you to crawl in the vents of a tower with your friend John McClane ? Or do you feel more like German terrorists are the most dangerous ones and you must stop them at any cost ? Dive into the classic action movie Die Hard !
Die Hard was directed by John McTiernan (Predator, Last Action Hero…) and released in 1988, it is based on Roderick Thorp’s novel Nothing Lasts Forever (1979). We follow John McClane (Bruce Willis), a New York Police Department cop who is off-duty in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve. He is there to meet his wife Holly, who works as an employee for the Nakatomi Corporation, and he is invited at their corporate Christmas party. However, while John is changing, West German terrorist Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) arrives in the party with his whole crew. They take control in the tower, cutting communication with the outside and take the guests as hostages. Using the terrorist act as a distraction, Hans Gruber is actually planning to steal bearing bonds worth $640 million. As he was forgotten by the thug group, John McClane manages to slip away but he fails to alert the authority. From there, John understands that he can’t only count on himself to save his wife and the other hostages from the claws of the German terrorists. He will have to dispatch them one by one and foil Hans Gruber’s plan.
Die Hard was a huge commercial success, it was the movie that turned Bruce Willis into an action movie star worldwide as he is the lone hero that fights overwhelming odds. It is considered as a Christmas themed movie due to all the references to the festivities (although some disagree about putting this label on Die Hard), but it is way more action oriented than the traditional ones. Indeed, Die Hard is one of the top contenders when debating to choose the best Christmas movie of all time. The success of the movie turned Die Hard into a franchise, with several video games of four sequels of good quality (but which couldn’t reach the level of the first movie). Die Hard had a very strong legacy on action movies, as a lot of directors tried to imitate the recipe of the isolated hero trying to fight a colorful terrorist, like Speed or Passenger 57. While some of them were good movies, they never managed to master all the ingredients that made Die Hard one of the best action movies of all time.
